Budget Overruns in Push Traffic — And How to Prevent Them

Today we’re publishing a useful article from the team at Datspush. In this piece, they tackle a burning issue — budget overruns in push campaigns — and share how to avoid them.

Budget Overruns in Push Traffic — And How to Prevent Them

The classic question: why did I set a $100 test budget and blow through the whole thing so fast?

Even if you’ve never asked yourself this question, we strongly recommend reading this anyway. Forewarned is forearmed 😉

Let’s revisit the scenario: you set a budget limit for your campaign, but for some reason you went over it. What could have happened?

Situation #1

You created a campaign with a $100 budget limit, but when entering the cost-per-click you misplaced a decimal and typed $0.1 instead of $0.01.

You win the auction, your creatives go out to the entire subscriber base. In the first 10 minutes, only a few clicks come in — you don’t think much of it, decide to wait, don’t pause the campaign, and naturally don’t double-check the CPC.

After a while, the remaining users start actively opening push notifications — and now you’re paying $0.10 for every single click. Imagine how far over budget you can go, because even after the limit is hit, the system can’t recall pushes that have already been sent.

Situation #2

Showing a German-targeted ad to users in Uruguay probably isn’t going to interest anyone — you’ll get a lot of misclicks and burn through your budget.

You figure you’ve already burned what you could, call it a night, and plan to test something new in the morning. But overnight, the rest of the subscriber base sees your ad.

The result is the same as in the first scenario — and you’ll likely spend even more.

What else can go wrong

Similar to the two scenarios above, but this time you didn’t win the top auction position. Your CTR was acceptable at first, so you kept the campaign going.

At some point, competing advertisers drop out — and now all the traffic is yours.

We’ve already covered what happens next.

It’s not all doom and gloom. Overruns can be minimized or avoided entirely if you…

  1. Before launching a campaign, ask support about traffic volume in your target GEO — and remember that you could win the auction at any time.
  2. Double-check all campaign settings before going live, especially targeting and cost-per-click.
  3. For top-tier GEOs, we recommend setting a frequency cap.
  4. Use smartlinks targeting the whole world. This can save your budget if you get your GEO wrong.
  5. If you’re a beginner, start with smaller traffic volumes and avoid top-tier GEOs. The cost of a mistake — and an overrun — will be much lower.
